Fierce Hearted Editing
Your Story Matters. Connect with Readers.
Your writing project ready for review.
Your ready for the next stage of development.
Editing is the most important service you can get.
It’s subjective, and yet, it’s not. There are rules for both writing and engaging the reader, and when they’re broken, it’s important to know if it works.
I’m a developmental editor. . .with an expertise in helping you identify the spine of your story. Different from theme or arc or conflict, the spine is your compass for how the story fits together. . .and where many writers get sidetracked or stuck.
DEVELOPMENTAL/SUBSTANTIVE EDITING for Fiction & Memoir
Developmental editing focuses on content, organization, and overall structure. Including, but not limited to:
- The spine of the story
- Narrative flow
- Point of View
- Character development
- The unanswered questions and holes in the narrative
“The true alchemists do not change lead into gold;
they change the world into words.”
~ William H. Gass, author
Editing that empowers you as the author. What you can expect:
You are the author. Your writing Voice is sacrosanct. Your intention in any scene and passage is considered.
We start with a conversation, and if it’s a longer work, you’ll send a sample so I have a sense of you and your writing.
I work intuitively with a strong background in craft and process. This means I see patterns, and where the holes, questions, and difficulties are for a reader. As well as the nuts & bolts of a good narrative.
You will know why I make the comments or suggestions I do. I provide examples and references so you feel confident to move forward. If your intent or writing is unclear, I ask what you mean and help you say it.
You hear what works, as well as what doesn’t work. And I always comment on gems in your writing.
Noted are grammar and syntax errors, historical and declarative statements without proper or adequate support, and overuse of passive language. These are typically put in a review.
Manuscripts are marked by hand.
Consults are by phone, and scheduled to discuss edits & answer questions.
A summary is provided for longer works
There’s a certain magic that Heloise Jones has of meeting writers exactly where they are.
I have watched her listen to our body language and discern the whisper of
creativity in our in-breath; we have been nourished when Heloise delineated the intention behind our mental meanderings and then expertly guided us — individually and as a group — towards vistas previously un-imagined. And I have watched her take our ideas,
infuse them with her wisdom and offer them back in ways that
supported, elevated and improved us and our writing.
